Biden admin 'terrified' over migrant flight program backlash, GOP senator says

WASHINGTON (TND) Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., on Thursday told The National Desk a new revelation on Capitol Hill has the Biden administration terrified. The House Committee on Homeland Security announced Tuesday it obtained documents which prove Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials had flown over 400,000 illegal migrants into the U.S. since Jan. 2023.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., on Thursday told The National Desk a new revelation on Capitol Hill has the Biden administration “terrified.”

The House Committee on Homeland Security announced Tuesday it obtained documents which prove Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials had flown over 400,000 illegal migrants into the U.S. since Jan. 2023. Such information, Sen. Schmitt explained, could prove damning for the Biden administration.

The Biden administration, I think, is terrified the American people know the extent to which they actually believe in open borders,” the senator told TND via phone. “You’ve got nine million people here illegally and this is a catch and release situation. They’re apprehended then released into the interior of the United States, sometimes given court dates in the 2030s, its just a total joke.”

He continued, noting such a revelation would otherwise prove highly controversial for the president if the nation’s southern border weren’t already in crisis.

“This would be a huge scandal, but in Washington I guess this is business as usual for a lot of the Democrats,” the Show-Me State Republican added. “I think as Republicans we should stand up and say ‘look, we believe like most Americans do in to sovereignty of our border.’ Illegal activity that continues to take place to avoid our immigration laws is a mess.”

President Joe Biden’s border crisis has begun to sway even those in his own party toward a more conservative immigration approach. Several Democratic members of the House this week sided with a Republican-led effort to condemn President Joe Biden’s handling of the southern border.

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., on Monday also said the Biden administration has lost "operational control" of the nation’s southern border, calling for it to bring back a Trump-era immigration policy.

The White House Press Office did not immediately return a request for comment from The National Desk Thursday.
